C&rsquo;est une situation tout &agrave; fait ordinaire (notons qu&rsquo;il arrive que des victimes soient bien plus profond&eacute;ment ensevelies).<br><br>Dans ce cas, on peut estimer que le volume de neige &agrave; d&eacute;gager est proche de 5m<sup>3</sup>. Dans un d&eacute;p&ocirc;t d&rsquo;avalanche, la masse volumique de la neige &eacute;tant voisine de 500kg/m<sup>3</sup>, on en d&eacute;duit qu&rsquo;il faudra d&eacute;placer environ 2,5 tonnes de neige. Si la personne est enfouie sous 2 m de neige, ce sera plut&ocirc;t 4 &agrave; 5 tonnes qu&rsquo;il faudra d&eacute;placer, soit <strong>l&rsquo;&eacute;quivalent de 100 &agrave; 150 sacs de ciment! On r&eacute;alise que l&rsquo;effort ne sera pas insignifiant.</strong><br><br>Et on arrive &agrave; une question essentielle : combien de temps vous faudra-t-il pour d&eacute;blayer ces centaines de kilogrammes de neige compact&eacute;e, dans laquelle il est difficile d&rsquo;enfoncer la sonde, sachant que vous ne disposez que d&rsquo;une pelle de secours qui para&icirc;t tout &agrave; coup tr&egrave;s petite et tr&egrave;s fragile? Interrogation inqui&eacute;tante car on sent bien que la r&eacute;ponse ne sera pas r&eacute;jouissante.<br><br>En estimant le volume de neige moyen que l&rsquo;on peut &eacute;vacuer d&rsquo;un coup de pelle (approximativement 0,01 m<sup>3</sup>), on d&eacute;duit qu&rsquo;il faudra donner environ 500 coups de pelle pour voir enfin appara&icirc;tre la victime. A la cadence moyenne de 1 coup de pelle par seconde (ce qui est assez optimiste), il faudra donc 500 secondes pour d&eacute;gager la victime, soit plus de 8 minutes.<br><br>Mais vous fatiguez et le temps passe vite pendant que vous creusez: la victime restera certainement ensevelies pendant une vingtaine de minutes. En fait, l&rsquo;op&eacute;ration de d&eacute;gagement risque d&rsquo;&ecirc;tre bien plus longue si la neige est vraiment dure, comme c&rsquo;est souvent le cas. Ainsi, lorsque vous aurez totalement d&eacute;gag&eacute; la victime, au moins 30 minutes se seront sans doute &eacute;coul&eacute;es depuis le moment o&ugrave; elle a &eacute;t&eacute; emport&eacute;e, en comptant le temps n&eacute;cessaire &agrave; sa localisation.<br><br>Finalement, on peut avancer le postulat suivant: <strong>il faut environ une demi-heure, en moyenne, pour localiser puis d&eacute;gager un skieur totalement enseveli sous une avalanche.</strong><br><br>La nouvelle interrogation que suscite ce postulat concerne les chances de survie de la victime. Quel sera l&rsquo;&eacute;tat de sant&eacute; de cette personne apr&egrave;s avoir pass&eacute; une demi-heure dans ce &laquo;laminoir-cong&eacute;lateur&raquo;? Sera‑t-elle encore en vie? Les statistiques permettent d&rsquo;avancer une r&eacute;ponse assez cat&eacute;gorique &agrave; cette derni&egrave;re question.<br><br>En effet, &agrave; partir des comptes rendus des op&eacute;rations de secours, des courbes figurant une approximation de la probabilit&eacute; de survie d&rsquo;une personne ensevelie sous la neige ont &eacute;t&eacute; dress&eacute;es et sont r&eacute;guli&egrave;rement actualis&eacute;es. Ces courbes indiquent la proportion de victimes d&eacute;gag&eacute;es vivantes en fonction du temps &eacute;coul&eacute; &agrave; compter de l&rsquo;arr&ecirc;t de l&rsquo;avalanche.
